As it has so many aspects of modern life, digital technology is revolutionizing the dental industry. After evolving over the past two decades, digital equipment in the dentist's office has hit its peak, with an increasing number of manufacturers turning their focus to sleek, efficient, precise digital tools. Most dentists are using some form of digital technology in their office to varying degrees, from the simplest electronic filing system to the most advanced chairside CAD/CAM (computer-aided manufacturing and design) machine. With the widespread proliferation of digital dentistry, the field is on the precipice of a new age of dentistry. In the coming years, digital technology in the dental practice will become less of an exciting bonus and more of a necessity to keep up with the twenty-first century market. The five tips listed below can help you embrace digital dentistry and leverage it to your advantage.1. Read up on the latest technologies. Not everyone can be an early adopter, especially since digital technologies can be expensive, but it is important to include digital dentistry training as part of your continuing education work. Most dentistry conferences and seminars nowadays include training and courses on digital tools so you can hone your skills and try out new machines to see if they suit your office's needs. As well as continuing education, you also need to diligently research any equipment you're considering purchasing. Fortunately, the digital dental market is booming, so you have lots of options, but make sure to look past a salesperson's buzzwords and promises to find out key pieces of data (cost per unit, materials required for upkeep, the expected return on investment of the equipment, etc.).If you already have digital equipment in your office, it behooves you to keep reading up on the most recent technological advances so you can stay ahead of the curve.2. Invest in an intraoral scanner. If you want to try out digital dentistry without breaking your bank, purchase an intraoral scanner for your practice (after having researched the brands thoroughly, of course). These machines typically cost about $10,000 to $15,000 but can easily pay for themselves in time. With an intraoral scanner, you'll avoid using messy PVS for impressions, replacing them with precise, 3D digital images and videos that can often be directly input into your or your lab's software to create restorations. Intraoral scanners are also very versatile machines-they can improve patient education, assist with orthodontic planning, and even detect caries.
3. Consider a chairside CAD/CAM system.Once you've tried out your intraoral scanner, you may want to invest in a chairside CAD/CAM system. This is an increasingly popular investment option for dentists because it means you can create same-day restorations, saving you and your patients' time and money. It can also lower your lab costs and expand your services, which could you're your business. However, CAD/CAM machines are significantly more expensive than intraoral scanners (often in excess of $100,000), so you should crunch the numbers with your accountant before taking the plunge.4. Digitize your files. While equipment like intraoral scanners and CAD/CAM systems are very important to your practice, the safety and functionality of your files is arguable just as vital. Over 90 percent of dentists have already switched to EHR, or Electronic Health Records, which allow front office staff, hygienists, dentists, and specialists to review patients' files on the computer. EHR systems make scheduling appointments, making diagnoses, creating treatment plans, and billing patients much more efficient and effective processes. If you're concerned about meeting HIPAA standards, EHR can also safeguard your patients' privacy and therefore protect your practice from the ramifications of violations. For even simpler, more streamlined filing, consider using a cloud-based system over EHR stored on a LAN (local area network). This allows any of your staff to access files on any tablet or device and backs up your information to secure servers via the Internet.5. Train yourself and your staff in new devices.Your first concern with regard to digital dentistry might be the cost of your machines, but remember that making these changes also requires an investment of time and energy. Your expensive CAD/CAM machine won't do you much good if you and your employees don't know how to use it properly. When you decide to transition to digital dentistry, involve your staff in this decision and take the time for everyone to learn how to use the new equipment.Embrace the Digital Age of DentistryBy following these suggestions, you can ensure your dental practice's long-term success. Doing proper research, making wise investments, and making an effort to learn the ins and outs of new technology can allow your office to thrive for many years to come.

Why Dental Implants Are The Ideal Solution For Missing Teeth
Modern dentistry has made considerable advancements in just the past decade alone. One of the biggest indicators of advancing dental care and solutions is the rise of the dental implant. Before implants became so well-known, people who were missing one tooth or even a few were relegated to bulky dentures or went without.Although living with missing teeth can cause other dental issues, few people wanted to elect to use a bridge or dentures to cover up the problem. This case is especially true with young people. However, until recently, there was not a very good alternative to replace missing teeth. Therefore, the dental industry decided to ban together and create a superior method for replacing missing teeth. Their innovative ability gave society the rise of the dental implant and what a leap forward it has been. The reason many patients did not enjoy dental implants is because they had to be removed, cleaned and replaced separate from the oral cavity. Additionally, it was common for them to rub sores on gums, have food become stuck underneath them and prevented the wearer from eating certain foods.Yet, patients who received dental implants have none of the issues associated with other solutions for missing teeth. This is because the implant functions as another tooth. Thus, once it is in place, the person can resume his or her lifestyle. The tooth needs no additional care, other than daily brushing, flossing and regular checkups. However, just because dentists have been singing their praises everywhere, it does not mean that everyone is an ideal candidate for them. The ideal patient has a healthy mouth, good oral hygiene, substantial bone to hold the implant and healthy gum tissue. All of those factors are important because the wearer must be able to properly care for the tooth and improper bone and infected gum tissue can cause the implant to break or a gum infection to spread to other areas, thus risking the patient's health.Once the person has been evaluated as a good candidate for the procedure, they have to visit their periodontist for two procedures. The initial procedure is typically performed under local anesthesia and includes placing the implant's root and waiting up to four months for everything to fuse together.
This is where, healthy, dense bone is key. The healthier and denser the bone, the quicker the healing process will finish. Then, a few months later the dentist will place the implant's crown and the procedure is finished. One reason dentists love the procedure is because it has a very high success rate. It has more than a 95% success rate. One cannot find any other option for missing teeth with a higher rate. Also, periodontists, orthodontists, dentists and other dental professionals are obsessed with symmetry and implants don't block the flow of a person's symmetry because the implant is part of their body now.Another reason why implants are ideal is because with proper care, they do not need to be replaced. Yes, dental implants can last a lifetime and match anyone's lifestyle. People can eat their favorite foods and continue their oral health habits without adding any extra steps to their nightly and morning routines. One of the most appealing parts of a dental implant to a patient is the look. Implants look 100% natural and hardly anyone can discern the difference between the natural tooth and the implant. It is not uncommon for implants to be hand-painted using a patient's real teeth as the guideline.Quite a bit of skill goes into crafting implants which is why it is nearly impossible to tell an implant from a real tooth. Dental implants are far and away the best option for people who are able to receive them.Implants balance a patient's symmetry, become a part of the patient, look and feel natural, have a high success rate and don't require any extra care. People who have implants typically have them for life and they can eat anything they want without worrying about the implant falling out. This is modern dentistry at its finest.

Bad Breath Smell - Common Causes and Remedies
Once you know what is causing the bad breath smell, also known as halitosis, its treatment becomes easy. The most frequent cause is bacterial growth in our mouth. So, if you avoid getting bacteria accumulated in the mouth, the unpleasant smell gets eliminated. The easiest way to avoid bacterial growth in mouth is to brush your teeth at least two times a day, and exercise daily flossing. It is also important to brush your tongue to keep halitosis under control. The likelihood of developing bad breath is higher in case of a dry mouth, compared to a damp mouth. This implies that drinking lot of water helps keeping bad smell at bay. You can also keep your mouth damp by chewing gum without sugar, as that encourages the production of saliva, keeping the mouth damp. It is important not to use gums containing sugar, as the sugar is responsible for causing tooth decay, which in turn is responsible for the creation of bad breath. It is recommended to call upon your dentist at least two times a year, because dentists can spot cavities, largely responsible for causing disagreeable mouth odors, and fill them up.A dentist can educate you on how to clean your teeth appropriately. Dentists can also recommend the most effective mouthwash for you. Since bacteria that leads to a bad-smelling mouth tend to get accumulated on the tongue, it is imperative to clean your tongue also. In case you are wearing dentures, do follow the instructions of your dentist to prevent an unpleasant smell of your breath.
It's essential to maintain a good oral hygiene for avoiding bad breath smell. You should also realize that certain foods can also cause bad breath. Some such foods include garlic, onion, deli meats and certain kinds of cheese. These should be avoided to keep your breath smelling fresh. However, at times, you may not be able to avoid such odor causing foods. In such cases, the mere brushing of your teeth doesn't eliminate those unpleasant odors, as they generally hang around for one or two days. The most practical way to control bad breath on those days is to use mouthwash and chew gums containing mint. Some people manage avoiding unpleasant smelling mouths by chewing a stem of fresh parley after their meals. Those people having issues of bad breath should not smoke. If this can't be avoided, the only way to suppress bad odor is to chew gums and mint. For treating bad breath, you have to brush and floss regularly, as well as keep your mouth moist and body hydrated. Despite these measures, a smoker's may continue to smell bad.At times, the cause of bad breath may be certain medications or a bad state of health. Such cases call for expert medical advice. Some of the diseases known to cause bad breath smell are diabetes, gum disease, certain kinds of cancers, kidney failure or an erratic functioning of the bowls. Therefore, it is important to consult your doctor when getting affected by halitosis in order to know its cause and get the subsequent treatment.

Something to Know About Teeth Whitening
Cosmetic Dentistry involves many types of dental treatments like:• Bonding
• Porcelain veneers
• Crowning
• Grafting
• Enameloplasty
• Gum depigmentation
• Gingivectomy
• Tooth straighteningetc. But the most sought after and popular cosmetic dentistry option is 'teeth whitening'. An estimated $18 billion is spent in the US annually by people who undergo tooth whitening treatment. What is tooth whitening? It is a procedure to help remove discoloration and stains from the teeth. It is one of the most popular procedures in cosmetic dentistry because it transforms the way people look as teeth flash brighter and a good set of shining teeth is a beautiful sight. However, over time since teeth tend to get stained and discolored it has to be repeated regularly to maintain the brightness. The common reasons for tooth staining and yellowing are:• Tobacco usage
• Consumption of colored liquids like coffee, tea and wine
• Improper care of teeth
• Ageing also thins the enamel making teeth look dull and stainedThe process of tooth whitening is effective most on surface (extrinsic) stains rather than intrinsic (inside the enamel) stains.Types of tooth whiteningTooth whitening is of two basic types - vital and non-vital. Teeth that have live nerves undergo vital whitening while teeth that no longer have live nerves after a root-canal treatment undergo non-vital whitening. Tooth bleaching is a simple procedure done by a dentist by applying a whitening gel or paste directly to the surface of the tooth. The paste or gel may likely contain hydrogen peroxide, a lightening agent.
The most common type of vital tooth whitening uses a gel-like whitening solution that is applied directly to the tooth surface. This product contains some form of hydrogen peroxide.Dental BleachingTooth whitening also called dental bleaching is a common procedure in dentistry. Bleaching is the term used to refer to process that goes beyond whitening or natural color. Tooth bleaching involves the use of chemicals like carbamide peroxide. Along with tooth whitening gel, the dentist uses a specialized laser to activate the gel triggering off the bleaching process.Although tooth bleaching today uses modern equipment and chemicals, it is actually an ancient practice used by Romans and some other civilizations; goat milk and urine were used to keep teeth white.Difference between whitening and bleachingWhitening refers to restoration of the tooth's surface color by removing dirt and stains. Hence, any product like toothpaste or tooth gel that acts like a cleaner is considered a whitening agent. On the other hand, bleaching contains chemicals like carbamide peroxide and hydrogen peroxide and is allowed to be used only if teeth can be whitened beyond their natural brightness or color.

Keep Calm and Take Your Child to See Dentists
The search is on for your child's first dentist. As daunting as this sounds there are some things to be aware of during your search and some criteria that will make the decision a little easier for you and for your child. There are many types of dentists, such as general and family, periodontists, orthodontists, endodontists, oral & maxillofacial surgeons. There are even pediatric dentists that specialize in young children and easing them into a comfortable environment. The first step in choosing who is best for you and your family is to choose the area of expertise that is needed. Most likely, family or general dentistry will be the starting point. Making the choice of your family's practice is a personal one. Many times, location, insurance and even fear play a big part in the decision making process. Whether we like it or not, insurance coverage is a key factor in choosing dentists. Researching who within the family practice is covered is a first step.Asking some pertinent questions such as the experience level of the dentist, fees, referral policies, emergency practices, and even researching how friendly and courteous the office staff and hygienists are is a good starting point. Many times referrals from friends or relatives will also help immensely in your choice. Visiting the offices of dentists that you have chosen will be a great opportunity to see things for yourself. Taking your child with you is a wonderful way to ease any anxiety they may have of the process. Many offices offer consultations in which you can ask questions and receive further information that will aid in finding who is best suited for your family. Be sure to bring a list of questions with you to the appointment so nothing is missed.
If fear is a factor for your child, there are positive steps you can take to set your child at ease. When our children are young, they rely on our guidance when it comes to new experiences, and adults set the tone for how well their first check up will go. Being relaxed and confident will help them feel at ease. Many times, a prior visit just to sit in the chair to become familiar with the sights and sounds of dentists at work will be invaluable. If your child has questions, be sure to answer them honestly but without unnecessary details. Once in the chair for the first time the doctor or hygienist should go over each instrument and what it will be used for before actually performing any procedure. This is where your research for the perfect dentist for your family falls into play. Feeling comfortable with your choice will result in a happy, productive first visit. Getting past the fear will ensure that future visits will be a great start to a lifetime of good dental health.Dental hygiene at home is also something to consider. Before your child ever needs to visit a dental facility they should learn about healthcare for their teeth. Starting young is important. Proper oral hygiene, like brushing, flossing, using mouth rinse and maintaining a well-balanced diet will all result in keeping tooth decay at bay. Finding your child's first dental provider can be an easy transition into a happy and stress-free lifelong relationship with dentists. So stay calm and be sure to SMILE - After all your smile is what it is all about!

Interesting Facts About Dental Services
The Australian Institute of Health reveals that approximately $8.3 billion was spent on dental services during 2011-12. That's more than double the expenditure in 2001-02, which stood at $3.7 billion. Certainly, there should be significant benefits derived from such dental care, since people are spending more and more on these services.Well, here are some interesting facts about dental care, including the benefits derived from it.How Important Is Dental Care?If you thought oral health is simply about getting a sparkling smile, you're completely mistaken. What you may not realize is that the impact of poor oral health can actually constitute a silent epidemic. Indeed, oral diseases can greatly impact many seemingly benign roles in your life, including: eating, sleeping, work and socializing. The US Department of Health and Human Services clearly illustrates the impact of poor oral hygiene. Oral diseases can potentially hinder swallowing, chewing and sleep; while disrupting sleep as well as productivity. Commonly, affected persons end up with tooth loss. This can impact much more than your physical appearance, since a 1992 study by Locker revealed that compromised nutrition and deteriorating diets are a direct consequence of tooth loss.Pain and infection, as well as destruction of soft tissue within the mouth, or even death (in rare circumstances) are all consequences of poor oral health. Undeniably, such occurrences would greatly impact your self-esteem, as well as social and psychological wellbeing. Therefore, oral care is a fundamental component in preserving your quality of life and overall health.Economic Impact Of Oral Health IssuesSumming up the overall impact of poor oral health on individual Australians produces a much more startling picture. According to a 2001 report by the Australian Health Ministers' Advisory Council (AHMAC), the economic impact of dental caries was comparable to both heart disease and diabetes. In fact, dental caries took the second position when ranking the most costly diet-related diseases within Australia.
Who Is Qualified To Offer Dental Service? The Australian Dental Association (ADA) provides clear guidelines concerning the qualifications necessary for practicing dentistry. To be sure that you're getting the best care possible, you must check that your dentist fully complies with such requirements. One of this is the fact that medical professionals must be registered within the state where they're practicing dentistry.Any medical professional practicing dentistry should also possess a Bachelor of Dental Surgery or Bachelor of Dental Science qualification. Such qualifications are typically from Australian, United Kingdom and New Zealand universities. In certain cases, foreign graduates can still practice dentistry, as long as they reside within the particular state in which they practice and hold visas approved for employment. What Can Be Done Apart From Dental Care?Obviously, no one should just leave all the responsibility for his/ her oral care to medical professionals. Each individual should practice good oral habits that foster healthy teeth, which might even reduce the need for dental visits. Such simple measures as water fluoridation can help protect your dental health. In fact, a 2002 report by the Department of Human Services reveals that for every $1 investment in water fluoridation, between $12.6 and $80 savings are made in dental treatment costs.

A Cosmetic Dentist Can Help You Look Your Best!
What is a cosmetic dentist, you ask? They work on your mouth in order to give you the brightest, most attractive smile! But unlike a traditional oral surgeon who focuses primarily on oral health, they focus on your teeth's appearance. So if you're looking to obtain a smile that would make even the biggest celebrities jealous, consider getting a smile makeover. Read on to learn more about services typically offered by a cosmetic dentist. Why Get A Smile MakeoverBelieve this proclamation: the smiles you see on TV are not real, for the most part, because most actors, reality TV stars and game show hosts have all sought professional help when it comes to their teeth. They are, after all, in showbiz, and appearance matters. This phenomena of extreme smile makeovers are perfect examples of how a smile can dictate the overall appearance of your face. In this sense, the goal of the cosmetic dentist is to help you achieve not just the brightest smile, but also the most attractive visage. How do they do it, you ask? Well have no fear; here are a few of the most popular methods.MethodsSome people opt for traditional braces in lieu of expensive surgery to straighten their teeth while others take advantage of new technologies, such as Invisalign (a play on the word "invisible" and "align"). Invisalign is an advanced and proven technology that doesn't require surgery, and unlike braces, it's removable. It works with your gums to make your natural smile more attractive, and best of all, it's not detectable to the normal eye.
Porcelain VeneersGetting a porcelain veneer, perhaps the most popular method for obtaining a smile makeover, provides the least hassle over braces or surgery. Anything from genetics to everyday activities to what you consume can negatively impact your grill, especially in the front. Veneers are easy to maintain and can be removed easily in a snap. Literally, they snap into place.Dental ImplantsGetting dental implants requires sitting through a minor surgery. It's basically like getting new teeth. Implants are artificial, and when correctly affixed and cared for, they look like natural teeth. However, they are susceptible to normal wear and tear just like real teeth. If you opt for these, make sure the cosmetic dentist that installs them can also help you maintain them.DenturesLike implants, dentures look completely natural. You might consider dentures if you have multiple teeth that need extra care. The bright side; they are removable and less expensive than drilling. The down side, however, is that you'll have to replace them at some point, and that means more money out of your wallet. So now you've decided to seek out a cosmetic dentist. Keep in mind that this article does not provide all of the details, and that each office provides their own kinds of services. But be sure to discuss the above methods with your oral doctor to see if any of them would compliment and enhance those pearly whites of yours.

Finding the Best Dentist in Your Area
Whether you have recently moved or your insurance coverage has changed, you may find yourself faced with the task of finding a new dentist. The person you choose to take care of your teeth must be someone you feel comfortable with and trust. This professional also must demonstrate a thorough knowledge of dentistry to provide you with skilled care.Seek referrals from friends, family members and coworkers to learn about dental professionals that you might consider using. Ask pertinent questions about any professional you consider using, including queries about style of care, approach with patients, office location, office hours, emergency availability, insurance and fees. Ask your physician or pharmacist for dentist recommendations. Often professionals will provide you with only excellent names that meet their higher standards.Once you get a short list of names, compare them to a list of dentists covered by your insurance. Any recommended professionals who are covered by your insurance should move to the top of your list of possible people to use.Research names of dentists by checking state and local dental societies. The names included in these lists will be professionals with good standings in these associations. If you find names missing from the list, these people may have had issues that keep them from inclusion in an association list. Check education and training of every person, also, to ensure that you only consider those with the highest quality education.
With a couple of finalists, it's time to meet each dentist in person to determine the one you wish to use.Note office location and office hours to ensure that the person you choose keeps convenient hours at a location convenient to your home or workplace. Schedule a consultation appointment with each finalist to give you an opportunity to chat in person. Ask questions about the professional's opinion about preventative dentistry. Ask about the types of sedation available with each dental practice. Find out whether each caregiver attends ongoing education seminars and conferences. Ask about how the practice handles emergencies and missed appointments. Ascertain whether your health insurance covers dental care with this dental practice and get full information about fees and charges.
While visiting the office, note the surroundings to ensure they feel secure and comfortable. Observe the cleanliness and orderliness of the office. Notice whether office staff and medical personnel are friendly and courteous. Check for medical protocol, such as wearing gloves and masks during procedures. Notice how the dentist and the medical personnel communicate with you and answer your questions. A willingness to spend time answering questions is an excellent indication of quality. If you have special needs for dental care, discuss this with any potential candidates. Disclose your special health issues to determine whether any candidate you consider would be able to assist you. Some professionals limit their scope of care to not include patients with special needs and others prefer to focus on special-need patients. Some dental practices also cater to low-income patients, offering a sliding scale for fees.

Important Steps to Take to Keep Your Gums Healthy
Unhealthy gums are a problem for many people, and once they appear to be that way it can be very expensive to fix. For this reason, you must recognize the importance of good oral health. This is not only for your appearance, but also for your overall well being.People with ugly gums look bad and will be less likely to get ahead at work, making it hard to get ahead. Also, for those who are single, finding a mate will be harder. Married people, on the other hand, should be even more inspired. They keys to good oral hygiene are many, but a few truly important ones are listed here.Regular Brushing and FlossingIf this seems obvious, then you would be surprised at how many family dentists would disagree. If you are not brushing, and brushing properly, when you wake up in the morning, and then again before bed, then you are allowing your mouth to fall into a state of decay. Tartar is building up, food is rotting, and germs are multiplying. As for flossing, there are simply some things that a toothbrush will not get out. Think back to that scene of Jim Carey and Jeff Daniels getting flossed in the film "Dumb and Dumber," and then ask yourself honestly if it's so different from when you grace your gums with the freedom from everything stuck in there. For proper flossing and brushing techniques, it's a good idea to ask a hygienist at your next dental visit, or even watch a video on YouTube.Gentle Brushing and Flossing
One thing you'll find when it comes to guidance about how to brush and floss is that it should be done gently. Brushing that is more like deep scrubbing is not going to help your teeth so much as wear out your gum line, raising it and potentially exposing your roots. This is a problem found at the offices of many cosmetic dentists across the country. On flossing, it is important to floss into the gum line, but not deeply. While your personal trainer may say that pain is weakness leaving the body, dentists will tell you that pain is a signal to stop. It should not hurt to floss.A last note on flossing: many people who have not flossed will find a spot or two where their gums bleed. This is not a sign that you're going to lose your teeth, but one that your gums need more attention. If you floss daily, or even weekly, this bleeding will get better, and it's because your gums are healthier.Maintain a Healthy DietLastly, your diet matters. Junk food, and foods that are high in fat and cholesterol, are bad for your body when taken out of moderation.By having a diet that is high is nutrient-rich foods not only will you feel better, but you'll look better, and even sleep more easily. The opposite occurs when you don't.Healthy gums require healthy habits. These habits include seeing a dentist twice a year, brushing and flossing properly on the recommended schedule, and maintaining a good diet.

Unfortunate Ways Smoking Can Affect Your Teeth
Web MD notes on its site that smoking causes yellow teeth, bad breath, increased risk of tooth decay and oral cancer, as well as the buildup of plaque and tartar. However, this is nothing new. Family dentists have been telling people for years about the effects of smoking. The problem for many is that the immediate satisfaction of smoking is hard to pass up for a downside that is in the distant future, but do the effects of smoking really take that long?Bad BreathAfter one cigarette, the odor of nicotine (and everything else in it) is on one's breath. This can be alleviated with a meal or by brushing one's teeth. However, it is not one cigarette, cigar or pipe that causes bad breath; it is a lifetime of smoking that does.Plaque, Tartar, and DecayWhen plaque and tartar build up they break down the tooth's enamel. This leads to decay, and when something decays it is actually rotting.Festering teeth become ruined over the course of years, so their owner is not likely to taste or smell to ill effects. Instead, he or she will become used to the slow transition as new friends and colleagues find themselves repulsed.Sadly, this can lead to the loss of many lucrative opportunities.Oral CancerThe last stop on this very expensive train ride is cancer. Depending on the severity of the disease there may have to be significant tissue and/or tooth removal. Along with the pain and suffering, as well as the missed time at work and with loved ones, many find themselves in states of deep depression as a result of how it can change the way they look and feel.
Fortunately, there is some help available.Cosmetic Work to Relieve the Effects of SmokingFor those who don't stop smoking, the damage can never be curtailed. However, cosmetic dentists can help. This can be done with teeth whitening, veneers, and other procedures. The results are very noticeable, and many patients find themselves surprised by how much younger they look and feel when it is finished. Some insurance providers will not cover these procedures since they are elective, and many feel that the cost is too high, but it is nothing compared to the cost of smoking. How Much Does Smoking Cost?Instead of getting into the high cost of cigarettes, it has been reported that people who smoke pay higher insurance premiums and miss out on opportunities in their career. There are also the opportunity costs of smoking, as noted by Dr. Thomas Stanley, author of The Millionaire Next Door. In his book he notes that a young man explained that his family had never been rich because they never had a high income. While this may seem true, it turned out that both of his parents smoked a lot. In fact, over the course of their lives they had smoked more than 50,000 packs (more than 1,000,000 cigarettes). Had the money been invested into shares of the tobacco company they would have actually had a seven figure portfolio!Smoking and your livelihood are not independent of each other. They must be considered together.

Brain Inflammation May Impair Memory
It's already believed that periodontal disease - also known as gum disease - is linked to a number of health issues, including strokes, diabetes, and heart disease, but a new study is showing that good dental hygiene can even keep the memory intact as we age. Columbia University Medical Center researchers analyzed data from the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination survey that covered a study regarding the link between brain health and gum disease. The research study involved looking at 2,355 individuals, both men and women age 60 and up who had undergone cognitive evaluations as well as had been established to suffer from gum disease. The researchers discovered that the study participants who were found to have higher amounts of bacteria - the underlying cause of most forms of gum disease - were more prone to having an inadequate delayed verbal memory (which is the capability of retaining three words for a certain amount of time.) In addition, most did poorly on the study's serial subtraction test than the participants that were found to have minimal levels of the bacteria. As a matter of fact, the study found that the greater the bacteria levels, the worse the research participants did and the lower the level of bacteria, the better they did. The study's authors reported that it appeared that dental health is an integral factor when it comes to mental health. These findings actually make sense because "Periodontal disease is actually a form of chronic inflammatory disease that, like the results of the University of California, Irvine studies, has also been connected to the brain and memory health, at the very least in subtle ways.
Another study, published by The Journal of Neuroscience disclosed how brain inflammation has an effect on memory. Neuroscientists John Guzowski and Jennifer Czerniawski of the University of California, Irvine carried out that study involving rats.During the first phase, rats were placed in two equivalent environments and in one environment the rat's feet were shocked. When the rats realized which of the environments had this effect, they learned to avoid it. At this point the rats were given a bacterium that triggered brain inflammation and due to the inflammation the bacteria-produced-cytokine (the same cytokine that periodontal disease initiates), a protein that was released in the rats' brains, resulting in their not being able to recall which of the environments provided by the study would shock them. The type of memory impacted by cytokine is referred to as "complex discrimination memory," a type of memory that helps people make a distinction between daily activities. The hippocampus region of the brain was the main area affected in the study, which is also the initial memory area impacted in the onset of Alzheimer's disease. The neuroscientists maintain that their study showed that memory was affected by the cytokines which disrupted the neuron connections that aid recall and memory creation. The inflammation produced by periodontal disease increases the cytokine levels in humans. The links between periodontal disease inflammation, cytokines and memory impairment showed in the two studies points to the necessity of good oral hygiene to maintain overall body health and a strong memory.

Useful Information About Dental Veneers
Most of the people are not entirely happy with the condition of their teeth. It is hard to find a person, who has got all of his teeth exactly the way he wants them to be! Some of the teeth are likely to be either pale or deformed. As a result, people become conscious about them at all time and are they not even able to smile properly.Cosmetic Dentistry has been a blessing to people, who do not have naturally gifted teeth. Now everyone can make their teeth look white, shiny and in shape with help of dental veneers.A veneer is custom-made shell that is used to cover up the original tooth. Its colour resembles exactly to that of enamel. It is cemented over the tooth with help of bonding agent and once done, it integrates very well with the original tooth, thus giving it a better look.Veneers can be prepared from different types of material, but the most popular amongst them is porcelain. However, you should consult your dentist in this regard and he would be able to inspect your teeth and suggest the most suitable material for it.The complete process of installing veneers takes two sittings. In the first sitting, the dentist takes the impression of the tooth for which a veneer is to be prepared. After that, the impression will be sent to dental laboratory for preparing the veneer. In the second and final sitting, the veneer is cemented over the concerned tooth.
Once veneers are installed, you can use your teeth normally. However, some people might feel uneasy for a few days before things return back to the normal. In case you observe any pain in the concerned tooth, you should consult your dentist. As such, veneers are as good as normal teeth and can also last for many years. However, in some cases, they may crack down after some time. Once cracked, a veneer can't be repaired and in that case, it has to be replaced by a new one. The crack is likely to happen, when one tries to chew something as hard as ice or candy. Therefore, it is advised to avoid chewing anything that puts lots of strain on your teeth.Veneers do not require any special treatment. However, you should always take care of your oral health to ensure that your teeth remain healthy and serve you for a long time.

Useful Information Regarding Dental Implants
There are popular misconceptions with people when it comes to dental implants. In this article, we will try to educate the readers about the various aspects of a dental implant.First of all, you need to understand that your teeth are priceless and therefore, you should try to prevent your original teeth to the farthest extent possible. However, if you need to go for an artificial tooth, then an endosseous implant would be your best option. An endosseous implant is a dental implant that will provide you with an artificial tooth. This will be able to serve you for years, provided you take proper care of it.One of the popular misconceptions about artificial teeth is that it is a quick fix and can be done within a day. However, this is far from the truth. The fact is that the procedure involves drilling of gums and requires the gum to be properly healed before the crown can be applied. The healing is going to take at least four months. If you try to get the implant procedure done in a shorter duration, then you are likely to end up damaging your gums. Therefore, refrain yourself from any offers that promises a quick dental implant.Lots of people try to avoid artificial teeth, fearing the pain that they have to undergo during the process. Although dental implant involves drilling, the process is painless. Modern dentistry has improved a lot in recent years and it has been successful in drastically reducing the amount of pain caused during the treatment. Therefore, there is no need to fear the dentist anymore!
A dental implant is not cheap but it is essential. An implant could cost you anywhere from $1,000 to $1,500. The dentist will first check your oral health and after confirming it, you can go ahead with the procedure. In cases where there is an oral issue, this will need to be fixed before the implant procedure can proceed. This would most likely be billed separately. At the end of the day, a dental implant is worth all the money and efforts spent on it. The artificial tooth, which you get after an implant has been installed is just as good as any of your other teeth. That does not mean that you can ignore your oral health at anytime. It is very important to take proper care of your teeth and overall oral health in order to prevent your remaining teeth from decaying. Do not forget to brush and floss your teeth properly after having your meals and you will never have to visit a dentist again!

Dental Implant Process Explained
A dental implant is one of the best gifts to us by modern dentistry. It is now possible to have a new tooth implanted, which can be used just like a normal tooth. Some people, who had done an implant as long as 40 years back, still have it on and they are obviously very happy with the results. In this process, first of all, the flap is raised to expose the bone. The bone is drilled to prepare it for the implant fixture, which is place and then covered with a cover screw. This cover screw is very thin is just covers the opening of the dental implant. The flap is then repositioned over the implant. After an appropriate waiting time, the implant is exposed, the cover screw removed and replaced with healing cap. The tissues are then repositioned around the healing cap and are allowed to heal. After an appropriate heating time, the healing cap is removed and the crown base and the implant crown are placed on the dental implant fixture. Some people try to avoid it thinking that the process will be very painful. If you check out videos available on YouTube on dental implant, then they will definitely not make a pleasant watch! But in practice, the process is quite simple and painless. It does take a few months for the gum to heal before the implant can be rooted on it, yet you won't have to bear any pain during this time.
If you are planning to have a dental implant in near future, then you should not listen to the horror stories of your friends or any other person for that matter. Those stories are exaggerated and far away from the reality. They are only going to make you feel uncomfortable and might even prevent you from having an implant. What you need to do rather is to find a suitable dentist and he will clarify all your queries and rest your anxiety. The cost of treatment comes out to be just over a thousand dollar. The complete process will take around four months. Although, this is a long time frame, yet the end results are satisfying and long-lasting. You will be able to use your new tooth just like your other teeth. If you take proper oral care from here on, then there is no reason why a dental implant cannot last for lifetime.

Dentist Dread: Overcoming Fears of the Chair
Some people avoid the dentist due to unpleasant experiences with having their teeth examined or maintained. These experiences can create a psychological anxiety that can have far-reaching ramifications. Left unresolved, it is possible that the lack of preventative care for teeth could lead to tooth loss, gum disease and even diabetes, heart disease and stroke.Because a significant population has a fear of the dentist, many professionals have designed specialized practices that cater to people with these fears. If you have this type of anxiety, communicate your feelings clearly to the professionals to ensure that they take special care to make you more comfortable. It could be helpful to visit the dentist and speak with staff prior to scheduling an examination to ensure that you feel comfortable with the professional. Choose a dental office with a nonthreatening environment. Soothing music, quiet colors, and attractive pictures on the walls can be helpful for easing anxiety. It often helps if the examination rooms have an "unclinical" appearance, with instruments hidden out of sight. Staff members might not dress in the typical scrub outfits, instead dressing in nontraditional uniforms. Other methods designed to put patients at ease include complete explanations of procedures, asking permission to continue procedures, creating a sign for the patient to use to halt the procedure, and giving ample breaks throughout the process. Ask a dentist about newer technology such as quieter drills, less invasive techniques, and a special wand for administering sedation or numbing medicine.Once you find a dentist who will treat you compassionately, prepare for an appointment. Ask a friend or relative to come with you for moral support. Your support person might even sit near you during the procedure. Use music or television to distract you during the exam. Create a special CD or playlist of your favorite motivational songs to get you through the appointment. Learn one or two relaxation techniques such as controlled breathing or muscle relaxation to help you focus on relaxing your body. Speak with professionals about sedatives that might make any dental procedures easier. Make sure that you can go at your own pace through the procedure, especially if you are undergoing something extensive or potentially painful.
It may be helpful to pursue therapy or hypnotherapy to help you resolve your dental fears. Phobias often respond positively to therapy. One therapeutic technique involves introducing the fear in small and controlled situations to help you realize that you can manage your anxiety and overcome it. This desensitization technique helps you acclimate to unfamiliar sensations and experiences without creating an overwhelming situation. Therapy can also involve creating specific distraction techniques and coping skills that you can use while you are in the chair. Equipped with these tools, you can manage your anxiety more effectively during a procedure. The therapeutic process necessary to overcome dental fears is typically not extensive. Most people proceed through the therapy with between six and 12 sessions and then feel ready to have their teeth examined and treated.

Dentists And Your Wisdom Teeth
Ah, wisdom-tooth surgery. The laughing gas, the puffed-up cheeks, the ensuing days of eating only ice cream. Not everyone gets wisdom teeth, but those who do often need to have them pulled before they can cause complications.Wisdom teeth compose a second set of molars that grow behind your existing molars. They can cause pain as they grow and push against the gums and other teeth. But whether you're feeling pain or not, let's take a look at how you and your dentist can detect and remove these pesky bones.DiagnosisAn x-ray at your routine dental checkup will allow your dentist to look for complications with your wisdom teeth. Most people have four wisdom teeth, but, oddly, some can have up to nine or ten. These obsolete molars serve no practical purpose, but can be dangerous if they're pushing against your regular molars. Not all wisdom teeth need to be removed. Extraction is usually only necessary if the teeth threaten to push other teeth out of whack, or to damage gums or nerves. They can also form cysts inside your gums and can also grow toward major nerves in your jaw.SurgeryIf needed, dentists will recommend an oral surgeon to perform your surgery. Don't worry about the pain of the surgery - dentists use several methods of numbing the surgical area. Before the surgery, you'll choose whether the surgeon will administer anesthesia or laughing gas. The former will knock you out cold, and you'll wake up after the surgery with a few less teeth and no memory of how you lost them. Laughing gas will prevent you from feeling pain, but you'll be awake, watching as the procedure takes place. Some dentists may also administer simple Novocain, locally numbing your gums but still keeping you conscious. Surgery is fairly short - extraction usually takes 30 minutes at most. Afterwards, your gums will be stitched back together to prevent bleeding.
RecoveryAfter surgery, your job is to care for the tender, stitched surgical areas in your gums. They may bleed regularly for a few days, so you may be advised to softly bite down on gauze over the extraction points.Your mouth will likely hurt for the first few days, and you may be prescribed painkillers to combat this. You'll need to restrict yourself to soft foods - yogurt, ice cream, Jello - until the surgical wounds heal. You'll also have to gargle with salt water to clean the areas, as you won't want to attack those spots too harshly with a toothbrush. Do not prod or pull at the stitches, as this will only increase bleeding and slow the healing process. The stitches are plastic, and will dissolve naturally in your mouth after a week or so. As they begin to loosen on their own, you'll know that the healing process is moving along.
